World Meteorological Day is celebrated on March 23 every year. A total of 191 meteorological organisations celebrate this annual event.

Every year a theme is fixed for the celebration of the establishment of World Meteorological Organisation. The organization was started to keep a watch on weather and climate.

The theme for 2018 has been fixed as - ‘weather-ready, climate smart’.

This day has been celebrated since 1962. The World Meteorological Day was founded by World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The organisation became the meteorology agency of the United Nations to keep a tab on weather and climate.

Why is the World Meteorological Day Celebrated?

The World Meteorological Organisation always targeted to contribute towards the safety and welfare of the people. It is also important for water resources safety, food security and transport.

Hydrology research is also an additional part of WMO. Its hydrological services provide a lot of help by protecting life and property from natural disasters. World Meteorological Day 2018 Theme. This year’s Meteorological Day is ‘weather-ready, climate smart’.

WMO support the global demand of sustainable development, climate change adaption and disaster risk reduction. Growing population can cause tropical damages, heavy rains, droughts, etc. So, we should really be weather-ready and climate smart.

How is the World Meteorological Day Celebrated?

A lot of programmes and activities are organised on this day. Discussions are held with achievements of the World Weather Watch and Evolutions in the next century as main topics.

Talks about activities in the past, conferences, various debates on relatable topics are also held. Community leaders take active part with special achievements are awarded (The International Meteorological Organization Prize, The Norbert Gerbier-Mumm International Award, Professor Dr. Vilho Vaisala Award, WMO Research Award for Young Scientists and etc) and appreciated.
