India’s top selling hatchback Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and Hyundai Santro, which were launched more or less at the same time has been arch-rivals since last two decades. Both Wagon R and Santro are popular among the youth because of its tall boy design and good mileage. Recently, Hyundai revived its popular hatchback and introduced all-new Santro while Maruti Suzuki also introduced the third generation of Wagon R will complete makeover in both inside and outside. Engine – Maruti Suzuki has now introduced one more engine variant in the Wagon R which is more powerful and fuel efficient as well. Now, Wagon R is available in both 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engine options. On the other hand, Santro is still available in the same 1.1-litre petrol engine. Both the hatchbacks are available in manual and automatic transmission.
Interior – The all-new Hyundai Santro comes Premium Dual Tone Beige and Black Interior Colour, Room Lamp, Champagne Gold Interior Color Garnish, Dual Tripmeter, Average Fuel Consumption and a 6.35 cm Advanced Multi Information display while Wagon R also comes with a dual tone interior, three front cabin lamps, Instrument Cluster Meter Theme Reddish Amber.
Boot – Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has doubled its boot space from its last generation and it is now 341 litres in total while Hyundai Santro provides just 235 litres.
Price – The Price of Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0-litre engine variant begins from Rs 4.19 lakh to Rs 4.75 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and for the 1.2-litre engine variant, the price begins from Rs 4.89 lakk to Rs 5.69 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Meanwhile, the price of Hyundai Santro begins from just Rs 3.90 lakh to Rs 5.65 lakh for the top variant.
VERDICT – If you are looking for a good mileage hatchback then Wagon R 1.0-litre engine is a perfect options but if you want power and don’t care much about the average per litre consumption then Wagon R 1.2-litre variant is the one for you. But, if you want good ride experience, then Hyundai Santro will surely outshine Wagon R in terms of ride quality.
