Zika Virus affecting Tata, company to consider renaming Zica hatchback
Tata Motors Has In Recent Weeks Been Heavily Promoting The Small Zica -- Or Zippy Car -- With A Marketing Campaign Starring Barcelona Footballer Lionel Messi.
Zika Virus has sounded an alert in the entire world and its name has become synonymous with danger. The disease name has invited so much negativity that Tata Motors is now considering changing the name of its new Zica hatchback.
The decision has come in wake of global panic mounting over an outbreak of the identical-sounding Zika virus, the company said on Tuesday. The company has been heavily promoting the small Zica -- or "zippy car" -- in recent weeks with a marketing campaign starring Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi. However, the company feels that the launch has come at an unfortunate time, with the mosquito-borne Zika virus spreading rapidly through Latin America.
The virus has been blamed for a surge in brain-damaged babies. Even the World Health Organization on Monday declared an international health emergency over the Zika virus.According to Minari Shah, head of corporate communications at Tata Motors in Mumbai, "We are evaluating the whole situation. No decision has been made yet."
The car is due to go on show at India's Auto Expo 2016, which opens its doors in the capital New Delhi this week.
