In what may come as a rude shock to parties in the politically-volatile Uttar Pradesh, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on Thursday banned caste-based rallies throughout the state.
The notice has been issued to all the political parties in the state including Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) asking them why such a ban should not be placed.
Only days ago, on July 7, former Chief Minister Mayawati's BSP had organised a Dalit-Brahmin solidarity rally in Lucknow.
