Amid protests over the passage of contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, stones were pelted at the house of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s in Dibrugarh on Wednesday. A caretaker of the house said that window panes of the house were damaged, adding that Superintendent of Police Gautam Borah visited the house. The anti-CAB protesters also vandalised the houses of BJP MLA Prasanta Phukan and party leader Subhash Dutta in the district, officials said.
Earlier, Sonowal got stranded at Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and was unable to enter the city due to massive protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
In another incident, the house of Union Minister Rameswar Teli in Assam’s Duliajan was attacked by anti-Citizenship Bill protesters, said officials.
Moreover, army has been deployed in Guwahati, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Jorhat districts in Assam as the protests spread. Thousands in Guwahati took to streets against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
The protesters clashed with police and blocked the key GS road in the capital city of Assam. The police lathi-charged and fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters demanding rollback of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, was passed by Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Lok Sabha cleared the Bill on Monday.
