The two teenage girls, who were found hanging from a tree in a Badaun village in Uttar Pradesh in May this year committed suicide and were not murdered, the Central Bureau of Investigation source revealed. As per sources, the investigating officers also found out that cops had committed an error by concluding that girls were murdered. The girls, aged 14 and 15, were found hanging from a mango tree near their village on May 28, a day after they were reported missing. Autopsies had confirmed that they were raped before they died.Victims’ families had alleged that the girls were abducted, gang-raped and murdered by five youth from the village. They had also said that cops did not act immediately on the complaint about missing girls.Amid outrage in the nation, CBI started investigation in the case from June. The agency later confirmed that the girls were not sexually assaulted and there are very less chances that they were raped. Forensic tests done at the reputed Hyderabad-based Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics had shown that the girls were not sexually abused and a medical board had also said it was "highly unlikely" that the girls were raped. All five accused arrested in the case were let off on bail in September, after the CBI refused to file a chargesheet against them.
