After the Prime Minister’s office (PMO) intervention in the Banaras Hindu University’s crisis over rising eve-teasing incidents, the chief proctor of varsity resigned on Tuesday. Proctor ON Singh took moral responsibility for the violence.
The students who was victim of sexual assault within the university’s campus had lodged complain with the proctor. The proctor has been accused of not taking the complaint seriously.
Following the protests and lathicharge by police, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah had spoken to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the eve-teasing incident and the crisis at the varsity.
The PMO had also summoned higher education secretary KK Sharma to take stock of the situation.
The violence erupted after some students, protesting against the incident on Thursday, wanted to meet the varsity's vice-chancellor at his residence.
A number of students, including women, and two journalists were injured in a lathicharge by the police in BHU where a protest on Saturday night against an alleged eve-teasing incident turned violent.
