Curfew imposed in UP's Lakhimpur Kheri after hate video went viral

A hate video, which went viral, has forced the authorities to impose curfew in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri on Thursday night.
According to reports, the tension was brewing since Wednesday when the objectionable video with offensive content against women and religion of the opposite community went viral on Whatsapp.
Acting on a registered complaint, Police swiftly arrested two accused who allegedly uploaded the video first. However, the tension escalated when police tried to send the accused into the custody quietly.

People in large numbers gathered there and demanded that charges under the National Security Act be imposed against the accused even as they protested on the road.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Kheri district magistrate Akashdeep said, “To maintain law and order, curfew orders were issued. The action was taken after an incident of firing and vandalism that caused injury to a person. The injured is being given treatment.”
All schools and colleges have been told to remain closed on Friday by the district magistrate.
The district magistrate and superintendent of police (SP) Manoj Kumar Jha inspected the city and spoke to the people, seeking their cooperation in maintaining law and order.
