Property tax worth several hundred crores is due to EDMC from several institutions including DDA, Delhi Transco, DUSIB, Power Grid, and the cash-strapped civic body intends to realise the outstanding amount to come out of the red.“Property tax of approximately Rs 116 crore is due on Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Rs 1.03 crore on Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation, Rs 61 lakh on Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), Rs 88.99 lakh on Delhi Transco Limited, Rs 4.29 crore on Northern Railway and Rs 33.40 crore on Power Grid Corporation of India,” the EDMC said in a statement today.The tax offenders include “Mandoli Jail with Rs 35 lakh, GTB hospital (Rs 2.98 crore), BSES (Rs 22.41 crore), Estate Office, Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Science (Rs 5.40 crore) and police stations and other properties Rs 85 lakh due,” it said.Besides, Sanskar Ashram has Rs 16 lakh due and IOC Rs 2.38 crore.When contacted, some of the defaulting institutions however, could not be reached.The debt-ridden East Delhi Municipal Corporation is running into losses amounting to Rs 500 crores and has sought help from different avenues including the Centre and the Delhi government to resolve its financial situation.“All departments whose property tax/service tax is due are being approached, requesting them to pay their due property tax. In case of non-compliance, actions, including penalty, attachment of bank accounts and properties, would be taken,” the EDMC statement quoted East Delhi Mayor Meenakshi as saying.
