Earthquake in Manipur, tremors felt across entire Northeast region
The Termors Of The Relatively Mild Earthquake Were Felt Across The Entire Northeast Region, Including Assam And Nagaland.
An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 hit Manipur on Thursday afternoon, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. The termors of the relatively mild earthquake were felt across the entire Northeast region, including Assam and Nagaland. The epicenter of the quake was in Senapati district of Manipur near Nagaland border at the depth of 63.1 kilometers.
So far, there were no reports of any damage to property and loss of life due to the quake. The earthquake hit the state at 1.15 pm (IST). The Northeast region falls in Zone V of the 4 seismic zones in India. Zone 5 is highly prone to the earthquake with the highest level of seismicity whereas Zone 2 is associated with the lowest level of seismicity.
The region has witnessed some of the deadliest earthquakes and mild tremors are a common situation there. Assam capital Guwahati receives earthquake predictions almost on a daily basis.
