Inspector General of Police Sujeet Pandey on Thursday said filling of FIRs by Station House Officers has been made compulsory, irrespective of station jurisdiction.
"The SHOs would register FIRs without consideration of their respective jurisdiction," he said. Pandey also called for curbing the instances of "custodial deaths". "Custodial deaths will not be tolerated.
It would be the responsibility of SHOs to prevent such cases and ensure adequate lights in police stations during night," he said. He also had a stern warning for those who "took law in their hands".
Pandey suggested the district police chiefs to identify important village routes. "Police pickets will be stationed at important rural routes in order to nab the criminals, who escape through such routes after committing the crime," he added.
