J Dey Murder Case: Chhota Rajan, eight others get life term; Jigna Vora walks free

Almost seven years after the brutal murder of vetran journalist Jyotirmoy Dey (J Dey), a special MCOCA court on Wednesday convicted gangster Chhota Rajan. The court sentecned Rajan to life imprisonment for murdering journalist J Dey.
The Court, however, acquitted journalist Jigna Vora and another accused Paulson Joseph of all the charges for lack of evidence. Apart from Rajan, shooters Satish Kaliya, Anil Waghmode, Arun Fake and Mangesh Agavane were also convicted in the case.
On June 2011, Jyotirmoy Dey alias J Dey, a senior crime reporter working with Mid-Day, was shot dead by bike borne shooters near his home in Mumbai's Powai area.
According to the investigators, Rajan was annoyed with J Dey over his book Chindi -- Rags to Riches, which portrayed him as a small time crook. Rajan hired a contract killer for Rs 5 Lakh to kill J Dey.
In November 2015, Gangster Rajan was deported to India from Indonesia and lodged in Tihar jail in Delhi. Following his arrest, the special MCOCA court framed charges against Rajan in the case.
Rajan was produced before the court via Rajan’s final statement under section 313 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
Earlier on February 22, 2018, the prosecution had completed its final arguments. On April 2, Rajan was produced before the court from Tihar jail via video conferencing. The court recoreded his final statment under section 313 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
