Hindu woman from Thar to contest Senate elections on Pakistan People’s Party ticket

The Pakistani People’s Party (PPP) has nominated a Hindu woman belonging from a remote village in Nagarparkar district of Thar to contest for general seat from Sindh province in upcoming Senate election.
PPP lawmaker from Thar, Dr Mahesh Kumar Malani, confirmed the development.
Krishna Kumari, a Kolhi woman, is a social activist who had joined PPP along with her brother. Her brother was elected chairman of union council Berano.
She as an activists has actively participated and worked for the rights of marginalised communities living in Thar and other remote areas.
According to Pakistani media reports, Kumari has been asked by the party leaders to file nomination papers to contest the upcoming Senate elections on PPP ticket.
Kumari was born to poor farmer family in February 1979 having lineage to freedom fighter Rooplo Kohli. Rooplo Kolhi had waged a war against the British forces in 1857. He was arrested and hanged by the Britishers on August 22, 1858.
Kumari was married to Lalchand at the age of 16, when she was studying in 9th grade. Her husband supported her in continuing her studies. She did her masters in sociology from Sindh University in 2013.
Kumari told the Pakistani media that she is ready with all the arrangements and documentation needed to file her nomination papers.
Krishna Kumari will be the first Hindu woman to become a Senator if she wins the election in Muslim-majority Pakistan.
