The situation was likely to worsen in flood-hit Assam on Monday as the Indian Metrological Department predicted “extremely heavy rains” in the North Eastern state, including isolated places in West Bengal and Sikkim and Assam and Meghalaya.
According to disaster management, at least 30 people have lost their life and more than 68,000 people were affected due to the flood situation in seven districts of Assam - Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Charaideo, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who spoke to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to take stock of the situation, has assured all the assistance from the Centre to the flood-hit state.
Meanwhile, the weather condition in Jammu and Kashmir has improved as the water level in Jhelum river receded. However, the flood threat continued to loom large over the state as IMD predicted more rains in the coming days.
After crossing the critical mark of 21-feet, the water level of the Jhelum river in south Kashmir's Sangam was recorded at 15.81 feet on Monday. The water level in Srinagar's Ram Munshi Bagh was recorded 18.38 feet on Sunday evening. Though it was still above the flood declaration level, but had been receding since Monday morning.
The weather office has also issued heavy rain warning for Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Bihar.
This year, the monsoon reached Kerala on May 28, three days ahead of its normal onset date. It battered the western coast in the first half of the month and covered the entire country by the end of June.
