INX Media case: Delhi court sends Karti Chidambaram to CBI custody till March 6
The Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI) Had Produced Karti Before Delhi’s Patiala House Court And Sought 14-day Custody Saying He Was Being Non-cooperative During The Interrogation.
Giving no relief to Karti Chidambaram, the son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, who was arrested in connection with the INX media bribe case, a Delhi court on Thursday sent him to a five-day CBI custody.
The Court, however, allowed Karti's lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi to meet him for one hour each in the morning and evening. He was also allowed to get medicines on prescription but not homemade food.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had produced Karti before Delhi’s Patiala House Court and sought 14-day custody saying he was being non-cooperative during the interrogation.
Karti was arrested from Chennai airport on Wednesday for allegedly accepting a bribe from then INX Media directors Peter and Indrani Mukerjea as quid pro quo for an FIPB clearance.
“Karti Chidambaram is evasive in his replies…He made incorrect statements with respect to evidence. All this delays the conclusion of the investigation,” CBI told the Court.
However, Karti’s lawyer and senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that the answers of his client (Karti Chidambaram) "doesn't suit the CBI" and that’s why the agency was saying he was being "non-cooperative".
Singhvi said, the CBI started questioning Karti in August last year, and arrested on Wednesday. For the last six months, the agency made no allegations of non-cooperation.
"Kumbhakaran (the demon god from Ramayana) also slept for six months," Singhvi took a jibe at the CBI.
