Linking Aadhaar with SIM card is mandatory now as per the Supreme Court orders passed in February 2017 in Lokniti foundation case.
All SIM cards have to be verified with Aadhaar within a year from date of judgment, if it is not done then phones will be deactivated after February 2018.
Earlier, Lok Niti Foundation had sought the intervention of apex court to underline the unauthorized use of SIM cards in mobile phones.
Highlighting the issue of mobile phone verification in the PIL filed by the foundation, the main point of concern was that unauthorized SIM cards being a major threat to the national security.
The SC bench headed by Justice J.S. Khehar was of the opinion that it was essential to pluck out the fictitious subscribers to monitor the fraudulent activities that take place.
