In a huge surprise, struggling liquor baron Vijay Mallya has step down from Rajya Sabha, a day before he was asked to respond to ethic panels of the House.
Earlier, the Rajya Sabha ethics panel had unanimously recommended termination of Vijay Mallya's membership and had given a week time to respond.
The panel was supposed to meet tomorrow to take a final call on Mallya's membership.
Mallya, an independent MP from Karnataka and is facing legal proceedings for alleged loan defaults by his group to the tune of over Rs 9,000.
He was elected twice to the Upper House once in 2002 and again in 2010.
A special court had also filed a non-bailable warrant against the beleaguered businessman. However, Rajya Sabha secretariat says it has not received Vijay Mallya's resignation yet.
