Top two CBI officers sent on leave to maintain integrity, order as per CVC recommendation: Government
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said that it is absolutely necessary that a fair investigation is conducted in the matter relating to the infighting within the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Making it clear that the government can’t investigate the matter, the finance minister said that the CBI’s integrity is of foremost priority and that the government will not interfere in the matter.
Jaitley, while addressing the media, said that it was an unfortunate and bizarre scenario where two senior-most officers had differences. Now in such a scenario, who will investigate the matter. It is outside of the government’s control. The government will not interfere, but someone has to investigate the matter, he said.
To maintain the institutional integrity of CBI and in the interest of fairness, purely as an interim measure, they will sit out by going on leave. An SIT not functioning under either of these officers will investigate. This is in accordance with the highest standards of fairness: FM
Director has been accused by the Special Director. A Special Director has been accused by CBI. Two topmost officers of CBI have been accused. Now who will investigate it? Requirements for fairness & fair play have to be there. The government can’t investigate it, said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
The CVCs recommendation and the government’s action are intended to restore the institutional integrity and credibility of CBI: FM Arun Jaitley
Rubbishing the charges made by three Opposition parties, Jaitley said "I regard this charge as a rubbish. The fact that the three Opposition parties are saying, that we know what the agency was going to do next, itself casts a serious doubt on the fairness process."
