Lok Sabha approves proclamation of President's Rule in Jammu and Kashmir

Amid unrelenting protests and sloganeering by opposition parties over various issues, the Lok Sabha on Friday passed a statutory resolution, approving the proclamation of Presidnet's Rule in Jammu and Kashmir. On December 20, the president's rule was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir at the end of six-month Governor's rule.

The Lower House of Parliament approved the Statutory Resolution by vote of voice and allowed a brief discussion on it as a "special case". However, several opposition parties including the Congress expressed strong objection to the proclamation of President’s Rule, terming it "unconstitutional".

Jammu and Kashmir was placed under Governor's Rule and the Assembly was placed under suspended animation after the PDP-BJP coalition government collapsed on June 19.

At the end of the six-month Governor's Rule, the Assembly was dissolved and the President's Rule was imposed in the state on December 20, as mandated by the Constitution. However, this measure needs a approval by the Parliament.
