Maharashtra: Five people die of suffocation while cleaning well in Thane's Kalyan
In yet another tragic incident, at least five people have lost their lives while cleaning a well in Thane, Maharashtra, according to Additional CP Pratap Dighavkar. While a labour has died of suffocation inside the well, two trustees and two fire department officials succumbed to death after they went in to rescue the labourer.
"A labourer entered well to clean it and died due to suffocation.2 trustees who went in to rescue the labourer also died inside. 2 fire dept officials who had gone into well also died during rescue operation," the news agency ANI reported.
As per the latest reports, 4 out of 5 bodies have been taken out from the well and the rescue operation is yet to be finished. Preliminary investigation suggests that the incident occurred due to sulphur content in the water of the well in Kalyan.
"For chemical analysis, sample of water collected from well. We have taken sample from a nearby gutter as well which may have sulphur content. Prima facie, it appears gas collected in the well as it was closed since many days," Dighavkar added.
