NITI Aayog has pitched to exclude agriculture commodities from the Essential Commodities Act. The Aayog is of the view that the step would reduce handling cost, reduce prices and farmers will get an adequate return.
According to Economic Times, on condition of anonymity, a senior official affirmed that the idea has been discussed at the highest level in the government and Centre is likely to pursue all states for enabling the provision after taking opinion from ministry of consumer affairs.
The official further added that lifting stock restriction would bring healthy competitive environment. He said if the proposal gets approval, it will boost organised trading and would improve logistic benefits.
The Aayog has also submitted another reason for his initiative that the farmers have no reason to invest in better storage infrastructure due to frequent changes in rules and stock limit.
