PM Modi hits out at critics, says GDP was 5.7 % or below 8 times during UPA regime
“After Achieving Average Growth Of 7.5 Per Cent Over 3 Years, We Accept That Growth Rates Came Down April-June But Government Is Committed To Reverse It,' He Said.
Prime Minister Narendra on Wednesday hit out at his critics of the government's economic policies, saying that such instance has not happened for the first time.
Citing figure of previous government’s tenure, he said there were 8 instances when GDP was at or below 5.7 % during six years of the previous government.
While speaking at Golden Jubilee Year of the Institute of Company Secretaries ICSI in Delhi, he admitted that the economy has witnessed plunge in April-May quarter but the government is committed to reverse it.
“After achieving average growth of 7.5 per cent over 3 years, we accept that growth rates came down April-June but government is committed to reverse it,†he said.
Modi hailed the move of demonetisation and GST while dubbing it as historic decisions of his government.
He said he has asked the GST Council to review the problems which are being faced by traders. “We are willing to make changes as per the suggestions,†he said.
He took on his government’s critics, and said: “There are some people who sleep well only after they spread a feeling of pessimism all around. We need to recognise such people.â€
He took a dig at economists, saying “At a time India was made member of a group in context of international economy, it was fragile 5. How did it happen when big economists were there.â€
