Sanjay Bhattacharya, deputy controller of patents and designs Kolkata said, “The issue has been settled under the GI Act that authenticates a product relating to either a geographical location or community.â€
The two eastern states have been locked in a bitter fight over the GI registration of the rosogolla since 2015.
West Bengal chief minister on Twitter wrote, “Sweet news for us all. We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI ( Geographical Indication) status for Rosogolla.â€
Food processing Minister of the state, Abdur Rezzak Mollah talking to media said, “Happy and relieved. Rosogolla is my favorite but high blood sugars prevents him from eating it.â€
He added that Rosogolla is origin of West Bengal. We have decided to move to the court till we get the complete claims.
The two states got into a fight over rosogolla after Odisha’s science and technology minister Pradip Kumar Panigrahi had claimed that the syrupy sweet existed in the state for about 600 years in Puri and known as kheer mohana. While WB government quoting a 19-century history claim stating that rosogolla was invented by Nabin Chandra Das, a noted sweet maker of his time.
