Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday announced that the Indian Army will construct three foot overbridges at railway stations in Mumbai. One FOB will be constructed at Elphinstone Road station where stampede took lives of 23 people.
Niramala Sitharaman along with Railway Minister Piyush Goyal did inspection of Elphinstone Road station on Tuesday. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, senior officials of Indian Army and many leaders of Mumbai BJP were also present on the occasion.
Earlier on September 29, a stampede took place at Elphinstone Road station which claimed lives of 23 people and injured 32 others.
It is first occasion that the construction responsibility of foot overbridge at a railway station has been given to Indian Army.
Earlier, Indian Army used to be called for construction works in emergency situations only.
Defence Minister said that construction of foot overbridge at Elphinstone Road station has been considered as an emergency.
