Indian Olympics Association Has Been Suspended By Sports Ministry For Not Responding To A Showcause That Asked IOA To Explain Why It Had Named Tainted Suresh Kalmadi And Abhay SIngh Chautala As Life-presidents.
Indian Olympics Association has been suspended by sports ministry for not responding to a showcause that asked IOA to explain why it had named tainted Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay SIngh Chautala as life-presidents.
Kalmadi served as IOA president from 1996 to 2011 and was jailed for 10 months for his involvement in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games corruption scandal but later released on bail.
Soon after IOA announced its decision, the sports ministry had issued showcause notice on December 27.
The ministry had given the Indian Olympic Association three days to reply to the notice. That deadline expired on Friday. “It was necessary to send across that associations are accountable to public and must abide by the code of conduct”, sports minister Vijay Goel said.
