Brexit blues? British Prime Minister Theresa May announces resignation
Theresa May Stepped Down After Failing To Win Over Her Ministers With Revised Strategy Over Her Plans For UK's Withdrawal From European Union.
British Prime Minister Theresa May has announced her resignation. In a surprise announcement, May said that she will step down as leader of the Conservative Party on June 7. In an emotional statement in Downing Street, May said she had 'done my best" to honour the 2016 EU referendum result. It would remain a matter of "deep regret" that she had been unable to deliver Brexit, she added. But a new PM was "in the best interests of the country". The 62-year-ol is expected to stay on in Downing Street as caretaker Prime Minister to oversee the state visit of US President Donald Trump, planned for early June, with a new Tory leader expected to be in place by the end of July. "Our politics may be under strain but there is so much that is good about this country. So much to be proud of. So much to be optimistic about," she said. Her voice cracked as she said it has been an honour to have the opportunity to serve the country she loves.
