A 5.1-magnitude earthquake shocked eastern Taiwan at 7:44 pm on Thursday, according to the Central Weather Bureau. Tremors were felt in most of the island except the southern end. Reports claim that the epicenter of the temblor was 16.5 kilometers under the sea and about 83.6 kilometers east of Hualien County Hall.

The earthquake was also felt in Taitung, Nantou, Hualien, Chiayi Yunlin, and Changhua counties. Services on Taipei City's Mass Rapid Transit system were halted where the intensity of 2 was measured. However, it resumed after the safety checks.

An intensity of 1 was recorded in Taoyuan, Keelung, Hsinchu, Miaoli, and Kaohsiung.
