North Korea demolishes nuclear test site ahead of summit with US President Donald Trump
North Korea has carried out a demolition of its nuclear test site with foreign journalist present on the spot. The demolition happened on Thursday at the site deep in the mountains of the North’s sparsely populated northeast.
The planned closing was earlier announced by leader Kim Jong Un ahead of the scheduled summit with US President Donald Trump in June.
The North Korea’s decision to close the site has been touted as a welcome gesture by Kim to set a positive tone and a healthy atmosphere ahead of the summit.
However, it is not an irreversible move and would need to be followed by many more significant measures to meet Trump’s demands for denuclearisation.
The North did not invite international inspectors to ceremony, which terms its value as a concession.
