Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 88 years old has died after a long illness, the palace announced on Thursday. He was the world’s longest-serving monarch and a unifying symbol for Thailand since the 1950s.
This ended a remarkable seven-decade reign and leaving a divided people bereft of a towering and rare figure of unity.
“His Majesty has passed away at Siriraj Hospital peacefully,” the palace said.
His son and heir apparent, the 63-year old Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, is expected to become Thailand’s new king
