Bengaluru:

CBI on Thursday registered a preliminary inquiry for investigation into the case relating to the recent unnatural death of an upright IAS officer, which triggered a public outcry.

“Pursuant to a request by Karnataka and central governments’ notification, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a preliminary inquiry for investigation...,” the agency said in a release here.

D K Ravi, who was working as Additional Commissioner of Commercial Tax Enforcement, Bengaluru, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his apartment here on March 16.

Police had said it was prima facie a case of suicide but the officer’s family did not accept the theory, suspecting foul play in the death of Ravi who had taken on the sand and land mafia.

Bowing to public outcry, Karnataka government had ordered a CBI probe, asking the central agency to complete the probe in three months. The agency had rejected the timeline, forcing the state government to come out with a fresh notification without a deadline.

On April 13, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) had issued a notification paving the way for a CBI inquiry into the case.
