Delhi Weather: Thunderstorm and heavy rainfall drench Delhi-NCR

New Delhi:

Heavy thunderstorm and monsoon rains lashed Delhi-NCR on Saturday bringing down the mercury level and provided the residents the much-needed respite from the sweltering heat and high humidity.

The day’s temperature settled at 31 degree Celcius while the minimum temperature was recorded at 28 degree Celsius, one notch above the season's average. Humidity, however, hovered at a high of 82 per cent, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The heavy rains flooded several parts of the national capital and the NCR. It also caused water logging at several places and many metro stations were flooded, according to commuters stranded at several Delhi Metro stations.

The IMD said heavy rains lashed several parts of north Delhi, including GTB Nagar, Burari, Model Town, Mukherjee Nagar, Azadpur, Timarpur, Civil Lines. The Delhi's Ridge observatory noted 20 mm of rain till 2.30 pm. In NCR, some areas in Noida, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida also received rainfall.

The weatherman has forecast rains in several areas of the national capital in the evening. On Friday, the maximum temperature settled at 32.4 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 27.2 degrees Celsius.

Weather alert countrywide

The IMD on Friday predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several states--Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Kerala among other states.

“Heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy fall at isolated places very likely over Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana,” the forecast for Saturday states. 

The IMD has advised fishermen to not venture into the sea in Odisha, West Bengal and other coastal regions.

“Heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over West Bengal, Konkan and Goa and coastal Andhra Pradesh and heavy rain at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, east Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Assam, northeastern states, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala,” IMD said.
