'Padma Shri' Alyque Padamsee, famous ad filmmaker and theatre personality, died at the age of 90 in Mumbai on Saturday. He received the Padma Shri award in 2000. Padamsee was best known for playing the role of Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Sir Richard Attenborough's 'Gandhi'. His other work included English language theatre productions like Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Tuglaq, and Broken Images.
Apart from being a noted actor, Padamsee was the brain behind several ad campaigns, including Hamara Bajaj, the Liril girl and the MRF muscle man. Padamsee was the Chief Executive of Lintas India - one of the country's top ad agencies - for 14 years. Known as the 'brand father' of Indian advertising, he went on to build over 100 brands.
Early Life of Alyque Padamsee
Born in 1928 into a traditional Khoka Muslim family, Alyque Padamsee hailed from the Kutch region of Gujarat. His original name was ‘Charanyas’ as his ancestors belonged to the ‘charan’ caste of court poets. His father, a village head, had earned the “Padamsee" (another version of Padma Shri) after he distributed his entire granary to the village during a drought.
Personal Life of Alyque Padamsee
The personal life of Alyque Padamsee was more of a roller coaster journey. He was never a man of one woman and after divorce with his first wife, he married Dolly Thakore. However, his second marriage couldn’t last long and ended up with another divorce. After two failed marriages, Padamsee once again tied the knot with Sharon Prabhakar but unfortunately had the same ending. The couple separate after few years of marriage. Padamsee has four children from his three marriages.
