New Delhi:

BJP president Amit Shah is set to address a rally in Kolkata on Saturday and set the tone for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) face off against Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) ahead of the 2019 general elections. The much talked about rally is being organised under the banner of BJP’s youth wing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and has been given the name of ‘Yuva Samabesh’ amid the heightened security following the canopy collapse tragedy during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting in July that left nearly 90 people injured in West Bengal’s district of Paschim Midnapore.

All the major BJP state leaders are expected to share the platform with the BJP chief.

The BJYM is expecting a crowd of around four lakh to listen to Shah and have planned the rally accordingly.

"Till Thursday morning we were expecting a crowd of about three lakhs for the rally and made arrangements accordingly. However, another 80,000 supporters are willing to attend the rally. We can't ask them not to come. So, we have decided to reverse the direction of the stage to accommodate more people on the road," Bengal President of BJYM Debjit Sarkar told IANS.

The rally, which will be held on Mayo Road in Kolkata is of great significance, mainly due to the fact that Shah and Banerjee indulged in a war of words since the National Register of Citizen (NRC) final draft was released in Assam.

Meanwhile, placards and banners of ‘Anti Bengal, Go Back BJP’ have already been placed by the TMC across the city. Over 500 party flags in and around the Mayo Road, where Shah is scheduled to address the rally have been put up.

Earlier on Thursday, several senior Kolkata Police officers, held a joint meeting with the state BJP leaders to plan out the security blue print of Saturday’s rally.
