Bihar shelter home rape: SC takes suo moto cognizance, seeks reply from Centre, state government

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Thursday took a suo moto cognizance of the Bihar shelter home rape case and issued separate notices to the Centre and Nitish Kumar-led state government. The apex court sought a detailed reply from the NDA governments in the Centre and the state.

At least 34 girls, aged among seven to 14 years, were drugged, scalded with boiling water, raped and forced to sleep naked in a government-run shelter home in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur.

The girls in their statement recorded before a special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court said that they were forced to sleep with the owner of the shelter home – Brajesh Thakur - a well-known name in the power corridors of Patna.

If someone objected to this, he would beat them with a hunter and rape them forcefully. The girls also said that they would often cut their private parts in order to avoid the rape for some time.

They claimed that one of the girls who stood against the abuse was beaten to death by Thakur and his men and buried inside the compound of the shelter home. However, the police dig up the courtyard and found nothing.

The Opposition RJD in Bihar had alleged involvement of some of the govenment leaders. Under pressure from wide criticism by people, the Nitish Kumar government in ordered CBI inquiry into the case.

The charge-sheet in the case revealed macabre details and a network of police, politicians, administration and criminals behind the racket that had been going on for around four years.
