The internet services were cut off ahead of the Centre implementing Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir last year. However, the government restarted internet services recently in several districts of J&K. After the restoration of internet services, the valley has been flooded with fake profiles and propoganda videos on social media platforms. The restoration of 4G mobile data services has substantially increased the use of social media platforms in uploading/downloading of videos and other propaganda material and their faster circulation.
The Cyber cell of Kashmir has taken the notice of rising fake profiles and propoganda videos on online platforms. If sources are to be believed, over 300 profiles are under the radar of cyber cell and several people have been called for enquiry in connection with propoganda videos. Most of the propoganda videos are being originated from Pakistan. The fake profiles are being run by the handler from across the border, inciting people by transmission of fake news.
Majority of propaganda videos, threatening political activists of valley through misuse of internet and to propagate terrorism, creating a problem for law and order, are rooted either from Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. Tahir Ashraf, SP Cyber Cell, JK Police, said, ‘’There are various anonymous social media profiles who carry propaganda stuff, they don't carry their actual identities, these anonymous accounts are either from here or any other country and they carry these anti national activities. All these accounts who carry anti national activities or unlawful activities, we deal with them under the law. we also issue advisories regarding the same and a lot of curbs have happened. Different accounts not only Pakistan but also from various countries are running. There was an anonymous account which was creating sectarian divideâ€ÂÂÂÂÂ.
Recently, a fake profile of Vijay Kumar, IG Kashmir, was made on socila media platform Facebook. Even, several friend requests were sent to journalists of the valley from that account. However, IG Kashmir took the notice of this incident and wrote, “some miscreants have opened fake accounts using my name & pics. Plz don’t respond. However Cyber PS has registered FIR no 19/2020 dated 22/8/2020 and investigation startedâ€ÂÂÂÂÂ. A press release was also issued in this case. However, the account was later suspended and investigation began in the case. â€ÂÂÂÂÂThere are many hackers, sometimes it gets easy to crack the account. In the case of Kashmir IG, the hacker was a Harayana user and we have shared it with Haryana police“, said Tahir Ashraf.
As strict action was taken in many cases that created law and order problem for valley like making encounter videos viral or addressing people to assemble somewhere, the situation is under contro ass of now. Many people dealing with such unconstitutional work have been detained. Stone pelting was a major issue for security forces in valley which has been stopped now and dozens of Whatsapp groups responsible for inciting people have also been shut down. SP Cyber Cell of JK Police said that because of collective efforts from security forces, we are today in a continuous process to deal with such terrorists. We are taking such propoganda videos and fake profiles seriously and will not allow anyone to distrub the law and order of the valley.
