SC refuses to stay Tamil Nadu's Act allowing jallikattu, slams state govt over protests

Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to Tamil Nadu Government on the new act of Jallikattu and has asked for a reply within six weeks of the new act. The Apex Court on Monday refused to pass a stay on the new act.

A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and R F Nariman also permitted the Centre to withdraw the January 7, 2016 notification allowing Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu.

It also slammed the TN govt for not following law and order during protests in support of Jallikattu at Chennai's Marina Beach, which ended with Tamil Nadu enacting law to bypass a ban on the bull-taming sport.

"We are governed by the rule of law. These kind of things should not happen. You must convey this to your executive," the court added, but did not strike down the law enacted by the state.
