New Delhi:

A total of 24 girls were rescued from a shelter home in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria on Sunday, days after the report of alleged sexual exploitation of minors in Bihar’s Muzzafarpur, police said.

Deoria shelter home’s director Girija Tripathi and her husband were arrested and the license was terminated following an investigation by the CBI, said Rohan Kanay, Deoria’s superintendent of police.

The whole incident happened after a girl escaped from the shelter home and informed the police that everyone inside the home were being treated like servants.

“When the order to close this institution was made, our people went there and the organisation’s director misbehaved with our team. Today, after a girl escaped from there, we got to know the reality of that place,” Kanay said.

“One of the girls escaped from the shelter home, came to us and said they are treated like servants. She also said that cars come to pick girls above 15 years old & the girls come crying the next day. An investigation is underway,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, the Women & Child Welfare Minister have said that following a CBI inspection in 2017, it was established that Deoria shelter home was running illegally and the order to shift the inmates and shut the centre was not followed.

"It'll be investigated. The concerned district administration is already taking action in this regard. Women & child development ministry is also looking into the matter. The children will be sent for medical examination and truth will be brought out," said ADG (law & order) on Deoria shelter home.

An investigation is underway and more details are awaited.
