INX Media Case: No Relief For Chidambaram, Delhi High Court To Hear Bail Plea On September 23
Delhi High Court Asked CBI To Submit A Status Report In Seven Days.
Former union minister P Chidambaram failed to get immediate relief in the INX media case after Delhi High Court on Thursday deferred hearing on his bail plea for 10 days- till September 23.
Chidambaram, who is currently in Tihar jail, has filed for regular bail in the case. The High Court also sought a status report from the Criminal Bureau of Investigation (CBI) within 7 days.
In his plea Chidambaram has challenged the CBI court order of 5 September which sent him to judicial custody till 19 September. Apart from mentioning his old age of 74, Chidambaram, in his bail plea has cited 9 diseases he suffers from.
Chidambaram’s lawyers also withdrew their second plea challenging his judicial custody. The court also sought to know why the bail application was filed late.
"When the judicial custody was remanded on Thursday, why are they coming to court today," the judge asked. To this, Sibal replied that it was a long weekend and he had filed the pleas on Wednesday on account of the holidays.
The Delhi High court on 20 August had rejected the anticipatory bail application of Chidambaram against CBI and ED in the INX Media case. He was arrested by the CBI in the evening on 21 August.
