In a major development in the Muzaffarpur shelter home case, the Supreme Court on Thursday directed Bihar government to unite 8 girls with their family members. The apex court also ordered the Nitish government to start releasing funds to the victims under Victim Compensation Scheme and take further steps to provide them financial help.
Over 30 girls were allegedly raped and sexually assaulted by Brajesh Thakur and his accomplices at a state-run shelter home in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur. Brajesh Thakur, a well-known name in the power corridors of Patna, was accused by the girls of forcing them to sleep with him naked.
The issue had come to light following a report by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) on the condition of shelter homes across the country. Following people’s outrage over the issue, the probe into the case was transferred to CBI and the agency chargesheeted 21 people, including Brajesh Thakur.
Court’s order has come after Koshish', a field action project of TISS deemed eight out of 44 girls fit to be handed over to their families. In July this year, the Supreme court had allowed ‘Koshish’ to interact with these children and their families to find out the acceptability of these children to their families.
