The 2017 ICC Champions Trophy got off to a spectacular start on Thursday with hosts England taking on Bangladesh in the tourney opener at the Oval in London.
Batting first, Bangladesh set an imposing target of 306 on a good batting track at the Oval. Bangladesh's batting efforts were led by their talismanic opener Tamim Iqbal who scored a scintillating century. Tamim's superlative knock was studded with twelve boundaries and three sixes.
Bangladesh was given a good start with openers Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar taking on the English pacers in the early part of the innings. Soumya fell to Ben Stokes for a breezy 34. Tamim continued to push the scoring rate by tonking the English bowling to all parts of the ground. The southpaw then forged a strong partnership with the experienced Mushfiqur Rehman, who played his hand with a valuable 79 run knock. Sabbir Rahman then provided late impetus to the innings by scoring a quick fire 24 off 15 balls.
Bangladesh would fancy their chances to cause an upset after setting a challenging 306 run target for the hosts. Liam Plunkett was the pick of the English bowlers picking up 4 wickets for 59 runs in his spell. Meanwhile, seamer Jake Ball and Ben Stokes scalped a wicket each.
It is notable that Bangladesh had beaten England in the 2015 Cricket World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
