England skipper Alastair Cook on Monday entered the record books as he became the first England cricketer and the youngest to cross the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket. The stylish left handed surpassed master blaster Sachin Tendulkar's record set in 2005 at the age of 31 years, five months.
Sachin Tendulkar, the highest Test scorer got 10,000 runs when he was 31 years, ten months 20 days old in 2005.
Cook, already England’s Test run-scorer, came into the ongoing second Test against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street just 20 runs away from becoming the first Englishman to join the 10k club. Cook was unable to score those 20 runs in first innings as he was dismissed for 15 runs.
On the fourth day, Cook flicked Nuwan Pradeep to mid-wicket for four to complete his 10,000th run.
The English skipper is the 12th batsman to get to 10,000 runs in Tests, after Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis , Rahul Dravid , Kumar Sangakkara , Brian Lara , Shivnarine Chanderpaul , Mahela Jayawardene , Allan Border , Steve Waugh and Sunil Gavaskar.
The left hander made his Test debut against India at Nagpur in March 2006 and scored 60 and 104 not out and surged to lead the side in 2012 after Andrew Strauss retired.
