Indian Skipper Virat Kohli Breached The Milestone Of 5000-run Mark In 109 Innings As He Hit A Sublime Century Against Sri Lanka In The Ongoing Test Match At Ferozshah Kotla.
Indian run machine Virat Kohli scaled the 5000-run barrier in 105 innings in the ongoing Test match against Sri Lanka at Ferozshah Kotla. The Indian skipper became the 11th batsman from the country to achieve the milestone in Test cricket.
Among Indians, he is the fourth fastest to reach the landmark. The legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar is the quickest in the country to score 5000 runs in 95 innings.
Virender Sehwag took 99 innings whereas master blaster Sachin Tendulkar took 103 innings for the same.He is the second youngest (29y 27d) after Tendulkar (25y 301d) to reach the landmark among Indians.
Kohli, however, has ample competition from other iconic batsmen of his time. Steven Smith (97 innings), Joe Root (105 innings) Kane Williamson (110 innings), Hashim Amla (109 innings) and AB de Villiers took 118 innings to reach the milestone.
Kohli is also the first captain to smash 10 international hundreds in a calendar year which includes four Test hundreds and six one-day international tons.
The 29-year-old also has nine fifties across formats this year.Overall, the Indian captain has hit 52 international hundreds and 20 Test centuries.
He slammed his fifth double hundred in the Nagpur Test against Sri Lanka which was instrumental in helping India register a massive victory of an innings and 239 runs. He joined former South Africa captain Graeme Smith and Rahul Dravid in 12th spot in the list of most double hundreds by batsmen.
The list is headed by the legendary Don Bradman (12), followed by Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (11) and Lara (9).
India has already earned a 1-0 lead in the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka. They look good enough to demolish the Lankans in the third Test at Delhi and will aim to equal Australia’s record of 9 consecutive Test series wins with a victory.
