Barely two days after being crowned champions in the inaugural Indian Super League (ISL), Atletico de Kolkata’s co-owner Sanjiv Goenka on Monday said they will be setting up a football academy in West Bengal soon.
The ISL franchisee, which is also co-owned by former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, has already identified four-five plots of land for the academy.
The franchise, though, is yet to “finalise on any particular plot for the academy”, according to Goenka who met state chief minister Mamata Banerjee at the secretariat.
A detailed plan regarding the academy would be drawn up once the lot was finalised.
“ISL will help in developing soccer, which is already a major sports, in India. In West Bengal, soccer is very popular. ISL will add to the popularity,” he said.
ATK won the ISL last Saturday when they defeated Kerala Blasters 1-0 in the final.
