Bengal shrugged off a strong challenge from Assam before coming out 1-0 victorious in a Group A fixture of the 69th National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy at Guru Nanak Stadium today.
It was in the 21st minute when Bengal striker Surabuddin Malick rolled the ball towards Raja Das, who scored a superb goal.
Assam were distinctly unlucky as they missed a couple of scoring chances. They also failed to convert a penalty kick at the dying minutes of the match as Suroj Mandal’s attempt flew over the goal post.
Earlier, Assam lost to Punjab on the opening day of the tournament.
