Sloane Stephens defeated Madison Keys 6-3, 6-0 to lift the US open women’s title at New York on Saturday.
The match was one-sided as Stephens trounced her best friend in straight sets. Stephens became only the fifth unseeded player in the US Open history to win the Women's singles title.
She is also the first American female player outside the Williams family to win a Grand Slam title in the last 15 years.
Jennifer Capriati was the last US women's tennis player to win a major, besides the Williams sisters. She won the Australian Open in 2002.
Stephens is the daughter of former NFL player John Stephens, who played five seasons with the New England Patriots before joining Green Bay and Kansas City.
He died in a 2009 car accident. Sloane turned professional afterwards.
