Facebook on Thursday announced that it will discontinue its ‘Moments’ app which was used for sharing photos with friends from February 25. The social network website took the decision to shut down. The ‘Moments’ was launched in the year 2015 which let the user to share pictures that are stored on the handset with Facebook friends without actually uploading the photos on the social network platform. The ‘Moments’ app was developed on the concept of Google Photos, where the user can easily swap group photos.
Rushabh Doshi, director of product management for Moments, said in a statement "We're ending support for the Moments app, which we originally launched as a place for people to save their photos. We know the photos people share are important to them so we will continue offering ways to save memories within the Facebook app’’.
Facebook on Thursday commenced to inform its users about the shutdown of app through email along with an alert on the ‘Moments’ app.
Apart from this, those who have used the ‘Moments’ app in the last year will also receive a notification when they will open the main Facebook app.
Meanwhile, Facebook is also giving reasonable period of time to its users to retrieve important photographs from app before it gets wind up completely. The social network website has set up a website which will be available till May.
Sensor Tower, an mobile analytics firm said that the app has been installed by 87 million users on Apple Store and Google Play Store since its launch.
In June 2016, the ‘Moments’ app was downloaded for a record 10.7 million times while in the last month, this number declined to just 150,000 downloads.
