iPhone turns 12: Relive the moment when Steve Jobs launched iconic gadget
First Announced January 9, 2007, By Steve Jobs The IPhone Is Most Anticipated Gadget Of All Time
First announced January 9, 2007, by Steve Jobs the iPhone is most anticipated gadget of all time. Days before the iPhone finally landed June 29, hundreds of customers lined outside Apple and AT&T stores for the US dollar 600 gadget. Over the years, the iPhone has slimmed down, bulked up, added new features. On June 11, 2007, Apple announced at the Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference that the iPhone would support third-party applications using the Safari engine. Third parties would be able to create Web 2.0 applications, which users could access via the Internet. According to The Wall Street Journal, the iPhone is manufactured in the Shenzhen factory of the Taiwanese company Hon Hai (also known as Foxconn). Also, according to recent news, Apple will shortly begin outsourcing the manufacturing of iPhones.
The first iPhone also saturated AT&T's network, causing years of angst until Verizon signed on in early 2011. On June 28, 2007, during an address to Apple employees, Steve Jobs announced that all full-time Apple employees and those part-time employees who had been with the company for at least one year would receive a free iPhone. Employees received their phones in July after the initial demand for iPhones subsided. From Apple: “iPhone is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone. We are all born with the ultimate pointing device—our fingers—and iPhone uses them to create the most revolutionary user interface since the mouse.”
