Tipu Sultan Jayanti: Protests in Madikeri against celebrations of 18th century ruler's birth anniversary
Despite protests by the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Karnataka government has given its nod to celebrate Tipu Sultan Jayanti on Saturday. The BJP had staged protests across the state over the birth anniversary celebrations of Tipu Sultan - the 18th-century ruler of Mysore kingdom. In wake of the shutdown called by the various right-wing organisations, including the BJP and Codava National Council, security has been tightened in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kodagu and Madikeri. The police have also detained several people protesting against the Tipu Jayanti Celebrations.
